Display Preset

Switching between monitor layouts on Windows takes six clicks spread across Settings and the graphics card panel. This tool reduces it to one, from the system tray.

The problem

The same desk gets used in several ways: two extended displays for work, mirroring to a television, or the main monitor alone. Each switch means adjusting resolution, refresh rate, display order and position — four settings split between Windows Settings and the GPU vendor's own application. It is an adjustment made several times a day that Windows treats as though it were exceptional.

How I solved it

The full configuration is saved as a named preset. From then on, changing layout means picking it from the tray icon. The app lives there rather than in a window, because the gesture has to be faster than opening Settings: if it costs the same, it replaces nothing.

Why it is published

It is a tool I wrote for my own desk, and the problem is not specific to me: anyone who alternates between a monitor and a television has it. It is MIT-licensed with a public repository, so it serves both as a utility and as a sample of C# desktop code — different ground from the rest of my projects.

Recent project, still in development. The repository holds the Visual Studio solution; there is no compiled binary to download yet.
